Ladder tournament by groups – technical description

This document is a reference document for those of you who want to know how your new rank came about. If you cursor over your rank and click on “view” you will see the details of the calculations. You can do that with other players as well. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

The main purpose of this tournament is to allow players to enjoy the game and play with others of the same skill level.

This particular tournament has over 80 players enrolled. Players have to sign up to play each week as only a limited number of courts are available.

In this case, 8 courts are available and 2 time slots.

There are 4 players per court allowing for 64 players. Each player pairs up with one of the other 3 in rotation. The match is over when all 3 games have been played and the score for the event is the total of the scores each player has received over the 3 games. In this case games are to 15, maximum score is 45.

New rankings are calculated on the basis of previous rankings and scores. These are subject to fine tuning change.

  1. set @win = -3 or -4; #winner of each group
  2. set @lose = 2.4; #loser of each group
  3. set @lastlose = 3.4; #overall bottom player
  4. set @mid2nd = -.8; #players who comes in 2nd in their group
  5. set @mid3rd = 1.3; #players who comes in 3rd in their group
  6. set @noshow = 1.5; #players who did not play
  7. set @subst = 0; #substitute players

Note the decimal in each one of these. They do not affect the rankings but do serve to indicate where the player finished within the group.  (.4 is in last position, .3 in second from the last, .2 (-.8) in second position).

We have slightly “tweaked” ranking points for players who come in first in their group. If they were 3rd or 4th in their group and they win that group then we take 4 ranking points from them. Otherwise we take 3 ranking points from the winners, as before. This applies to people in the first group as well, you cannot do better than 1st place (no place 0 or -1).
After the computer calculates ranking points the convenor  examines the resulting rankings and can make slight changes in the ranking points to alter rankings. This allows for the tweaking of players who were either ranked too high or too low when they started. Remember, the goal of the ladder system is to allow players to play with players at the same level as much as possible to make the playing experience as pleasant as possible.

The above has been copied from the computer program which calculates the new rankings. These are explained below:

All the numbers represent ranking points and are numbers which are added to the player’s previous rank. These become calculated ranks and only serve to put the players in order, from lowest calculated rank to highest calculated rank. Ties are resolved by placing the player who played or who had the lowest previous rank first.

Thus,

the winner of each group gets -3 or -4 added to their ranking points (their ranking improves). This becomes a calculated rank and must not be below 1;

the player in 4th position in the last group gets +3 added to their previous rank (their ranking worsens);

the player in 4th position in each group gets +2.4 added to their previous rank (their ranking worsens);

the player in 2nd position gets -.8 added to their previous rank (their ranking improves);

the player in 3rd position gets +1.3 added to their previous rank (their ranking worsens);

players who do not play in a particular session get +1.5 added to their previous rank (their ranking worsens). This prevents players from choosing not to play to protect their ranking. The .5 is added to break ties in ranking points with players that have played that week.

Players who are spares or who play as substitutes in groups that do not have 4 players have 0 added to their ranking (their ranking stays the same). Players who had a substitute play for them are assigned a negative score and become “no -shows”.

Other players may choose to join the ladder and their calculated rankings become the ranking assigned to them by the convener based on reported playing levels, subjective evaluations or just plain guesses. Their calculated ranking becomes this ranking +0.

The convener then looks at all the rankings and has a final say in the resultant “calculated” rankings. The convener then places the desired calculated rank in the override column and this override column becomes the final calculated rankings column.

All players are then placed in the order of their calculated rankings, ties resolved by their previous rankings. New rankings are then determined by player’s resultant positions.

Please note that this kind of ranking system may result in apparent anomalies. For instance, a better ranked player may not get as many points in his group as a lower ranked player but because of the difference in their beginning ranks the movement in the ladder may not be enough to move the player with more points in that group above the player that had fewer points. This prevents large movements that may just be accidental to one session.

The next playing session is setup with players who register for the session. They are then assigned to groups in the order of their rank. Thus, the first 4 players go in the first group based on their rank. Those may not be the top 4 players in the ladder, some of those top 4 may not have registered to play in that session.

The convener then assigns courts and times. Where possible the convener tries to accommodate times so that players travelling together get assigned to the same time slot. This is not always possible.

At the end of each playing session scores are entered into the computer and the whole process is repeated.

For the techies among you, this is all programmed in a single mysql query.

About Us

This club is for Stouffville Pickleball Players, everyone is welcome, we love to see you there.

Update September 17, 2020

Hi All Stouffville Pickleball Players

We have 64 players coming to the Year End Social on Saturday September 26th.

We are limiting the attendance to 64 players so if you plan to attend and have not signed up yet you will be on the wait list. If you have already signed up and have decided that you can not attend please e-mail me and tell us that you will not be attending so someone on the wait list can attend .

We will be having sandwiches that will be individually wrapped by Longo’s employees and we will have them out using tongs to avoid player to player contamination plus we will have snacks all individually wrapped.

The disinfecting table will be set up with hand sanitizer, soap and water for hand washing, a sign in book and a bleach / water solution to disinfect the balls once they have been used.

Masks: If you can not wear one please consider not attending  the Year End Social:

Everyone will be required to wear a mask when registering. When you are not playing we will require everyone to social distance and wear a mask.  Safety for all our members has always been our main objective while playing Pickleball.

Please bring your own chair if you want to sit while waiting to play. Only 32 players can be on the courts at a time thus around 32 players will be sitting and / or mingling. Do not sit in someone else’s chair.

We will have 3 categories (Social. Intermediate and Competitive) that players can put their paddles in while waiting to play. It is up to you to decide which category you play in. Please make sure your name is clearly marked on your paddle.

Hope to see you at the social.

Future of Pickleball in Stouffville

Below is the message that the Town has sent about Fall and Winter indoor Pickleball and what is happening with the construction of the outdoor courts.

Thanks for a great summer, as it was we still had over 140 members and 40 of them were new to the club.

As you may or may not know, the Leisure Centre has been gradually reopening, beginning July 20th with the introduction of the pool and library, and on Aug 24th the fitness centre opened.  A slow and gradual reopening is critical in order to understand needs, protocols and staff capacities. Our gymnasium currently remains closed.  In terms of indoor Pickleball and other indoor gym (typical drop-in) programs, we are planning on offering some limited indoor Pickleball times this fall, starting after Thanksgiving – however, a registration and screening process will be required for the time being.  I will have the draft program schedule within the next week and can share the details once I have all of the information.  As an early warning, we will be stretched this fall to accommodate all of our program needs given our limited participant capacities and physical distancing requirements as per Provincial Order (50 persons indoor), our required cleaning protocols, and limited staff capacities.  It is still too early to speak about plans for the winter as we are currently only planning in small intervals at this point.

In terms of the development of our permanent courts, the Request for Proposal for design services and contract management has now closed and staff are in the process of selecting the landscaping firm that will be designing the new Pickleball/Tennis infrastructure and surrounding space and managing this project.  We are aiming to have the firm in place by Thanksgiving.  Once that process is complete, we will begin our work, including stakeholder discussions and community consultation.  We will be in touch in November with respect to this project.

See you on the courts or in the gym soon.

August 2 Update and Reminders

Hi All Stouffville Pickleball PlayersNow that we have some more freedom, we are playing doubles Pickleball and are getting more players out to play. On Friday we had over 30 players

We must continue to be diligent in keeping the Covid-19 virus away from our players and courts.  We must continue to disinfect the balls when we come off the court, wash or sanitize our hands before and after games, sign the Sign In book when you arrive and keep social distancing at all times. If you prefer to wear a mask while playing please do so. If you do not feel comfortable playing doubles request a player to play singles when it is your turn to play. Safety is our first concern.

Please bring your own chair if you want to sit while waiting to play at the courts. Do not sit on someone else’s chair.

Keep your paddle and bag away from other players equipment. You can take your bag inside the court and hang it on the fence to get it out of the way if you prefer.

Separate your paddles when putting them along the fence when waiting to play.

We try and get everyone to play and if there are only a few players it is difficult to separate players into Competitive and Social Players. Please try and arrange games where Competitive players play Competitive Players and Social Players play Social Players. It is never fun being the one player in the wrong group and either all the balls or none of the balls are being hit to you.

We will put out two signs one indicating “Competitive” and one indicating “Social “ please put your paddle in the appropriate area when waiting to play

Please remember we are all in this Covid-19 together be polite to each other, have fun and stay safe.

Remember all information about time of play and days we play are on the Global Pickleball Network website.
Signing up to play:
Because we are a drop in program we never know how many players are going to be at the court. There are times we will not attend thinking that no one else will be there. For some of us it is a long drive only to find out that there is no one at the courts to play our favourite sport, Pickleball.
We want everyone to use the system to sign up if they are going to the courts. I would like the members to bookmark the website since they would be using it regularly, the web address is: https://www.globalpickleball.network/network/events/viewEvents/3511-stouffville-pickleball-players
We are running a controlled drop-in for Pickleball in Stouffville . For many days this works fine but for others, people travel long distances to find the courts empty or almost empty. To assist with this situation we are asking that all members REGISTER FOR ANY DAY AND TIME THAT THEY ARE PLANNING TO PLAY. This can be done days or hours ahead of attending.
Go to the Stouffville network (Click Link Below) and in the Menu just under the picture of allot of great looking pickleball players click on the event heading. That will take you to a page listing every event available. Pick your first applicable date and click on it. On the event page you will see a box on the right that is titled Event Registration. Click yes then update. If you want to register for other events repeat this process.
We have set a limit for every session of 32 people. As people sign up when you go back to GPN you will be able to see who is coming for each session.

July 5 – Australia Fund Raiser Prize winners

Hi All Stouffville Pickleball Players

This has been a very unusual summer with Covid-19 effecting everything we
do.
But Pickleball must go on. The Stouffville Pickleball Players are still
playing pickleball in the courts on the Ninth Line. The town of Stouffville
is still restricting us  to singles play. Doubles play is allowed only if
both members on one side of the net are part of the same household.
Yesterday we had our first doubles play. It was wonderful.
Australia had devastating fires this winter burning thousands of acres of
forest and whipping out thousands of wild animals.
The Stouffville Pickleball Players took up the challenge to raise funds to
assist Australia in it’s time of need. With the assistance from many of our
club members and companies that promote pickleball we were able to raise
$3,500.00 dollars which will be split between the Australian Red Cross and
the Australian Wildlife Fund. The draw was held yesterday and below is a
list of the winners and the prizes they won.
Thanks everyone for your donations in support of this worth while cause.

July 10 update – Getting Future information from the Stouffville Pickleball Players using the Global Pickleball Network

Hello Stouffville Pickleball Players
Needless to say this season has been a strange one for Pickleball. First dealing with all the concerns and restrictions created by Covid-19 and for the last week surviving the heat. As we continue to navigate this unprecedented situation the goal is to continue to find ways to improve the membership experience for all of you. We started off thinking we would need to have reserved courts but that shifted to a controlled drop-in. For many days this works fine but for others, people travel long distances to find the courts empty or almost empty. To assist with this situation we are asking that all members REGISTER FOR ANY DAY AND TIME THAT THEY ARE PLANNING TO PLAY. This can be done days or hours ahead of attending.
Most of you are wondering HOW THE HECK DO I DO THAT. For those of you that are already members of the GLOBAL PICKLEBALL NETWORK (GPN) and the STOUFFVILLE PICKLEBALL PLAYERS NETWORK it is super easy.
Register now with Global Pickleball Network
63 of the 106 Members have signed up for the Global Pickleball Network. If you are one of those that have not we need you to take the plunge. It is very easy to use and the price is right (FREE). To join click on this link  https://www.globalpickleball.network/network/register/3511-stouffville-pickleball-players
If you are not a member of the Stouffville Pickleball Players for 2020 but you plan to be a member once the Covid-19 is over you can still register with the Golbal Pickleball Network.
This should be a one step process and when you are finished you can follow the instructions above for registering for drop-in events.
If you have any problems reach out to chuck@cam11pickleball.ca and he will help you.
Thank you for your support this year and I hope you are enjoying the Pickleball.
